Call forwarding

A business number that rings your cell.

Give customers a proper US number and answer it wherever you are. Your own number stays private, the call still reaches you, and nothing is left ringing out. From $16.99 a month, added to your assistant plan.

Call forwarding is an add-on at your assistant plan’s level: Solo for Starter, Business for Growth, Team for Practice. Add it, and choose number by number which calls ring your phone and which the assistant answers.

One account

The assistant answers. Forwarding passes the call on.

Forwarding is added to an assistant plan, so both live on one subscription. Each number does one job, and you can switch it whenever you like.

The assistant

Sophie answers the calls you cannot take — books the appointment, takes the message, emails you the transcript. From $59 a month.

Call forwarding

Added at your plan's level — Solo to Starter, Business to Growth, Team to Practice — a number rings your cell instead. You answer it yourself, and your own number stays private. From $16.99 a month more.

One account

One subscription, one bill, one dashboard. Switch any number between forwarding and the assistant as often as you like.

Where we forward to

What we will ring, and what we will not

The exclusions are the honest part of a forwarding price, so they are on the page rather than in the small print.

Destination Cost Why
US and Canadian mobiles and landlines Included Counted against your allowance at one minute per minute.
Toll-free (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) as your published number 4¢ / minute + $2.50 / month You can have a toll-free number. Its calls use your allowance as usual and cost 4¢ a minute more, with $2.50 a month for the number.
Premium rate and revenue-share destinations Not available These pay a share of the call charge to whoever holds the number, which makes them a target for fraud rather than a way to reach you.
International destinations Not at launch Tell us where you need to reach and we will price it.

Metering rules

What uses a minute

A forwarded call costs us two calls at once — the one coming in and the one going out to you. It still only costs you one.

Situation Uses minutes? Rule
The phone rings but you do not answer No Ringing time is not charged. If nobody picks up, the call costs you nothing.
You answer and talk Yes Counted from the moment you pick up until the call ends, to the nearest minute.
The caller hangs up while it is ringing No Nothing is charged.
Your cell voicemail answers instead of you Usually not We stop ringing before network voicemail normally answers. If your cell is switched off or has no signal, voicemail can answer straight away and the call counts; turn on “press a key to take the call” to stop that.
You ring two phones at once and one answers Yes One call, one set of minutes — not two.
Somebody rings your number from abroad Yes Charged the same as any other call. We may show our number rather than theirs on your screen when their country would cost us a great deal more to call back through; their number is read out to you instead.

Forwarding questions

Short answers

Do I need an assistant plan?

Yes. Call forwarding is an add-on at your assistant plan's level: Solo is added to Starter (from $59 a month), Business to Growth and Team to Practice, on the same subscription — one invoice, one renewal date. It uses your plan's numbers, and moves with your plan if you change it.

Can I change the number it rings?

Yes, as often as you like, from the dashboard, for nothing. Point it at your cell during the day and somebody else's in the evening if that suits you.

Will I see who is calling?

Yes. We pass the caller's own number through, so you can decide whether to pick up and ring back with one tap. There is one exception: when a caller is ringing from a country that would cost us a great deal to call back through, we show our number instead and read theirs out to you before you answer.

How do I know it is a business call and not a personal one?

We tell you before you answer. A short whisper says which of your numbers was rung, so you know how to greet them — and you can press to accept or let it go.

What happens when I cannot get to the phone?

The call rings out, stops before your own voicemail normally takes it, and the caller is asked to try again later. If you would rather somebody answered, give that number to the assistant instead — it is already on your plan.

Can I keep my existing number?

Yes. We will move it across from your current provider on Business and Team. It usually takes a couple of weeks and your line keeps working throughout; do not cancel the old service until we tell you it has landed.

Is this a phone line? Can I dial 911?

No, and no. Forwarding gives you a number that reaches a phone you already have; it is not a replacement for that phone or its emergency service. Keep your existing line.

What if I go over my minutes?

You carry on — calls are never cut off — and the extra minutes are billed at your plan's rate. We email you before you get there, and again when you do, so the invoice is never the way you find out.

Can I switch a number to the assistant?

Yes, and that is the point of having both in one place rather than buying forwarding from a phone company. It is a switch in the dashboard on the number you already have, not a new number and not a migration.
